Skilled Facilitators Program
About
This program provides small-group educators with the opportunity to demonstrate and document their sound conceptual and practical understanding of facilitating effective small-group learning in higher education (e.g., facilitating tutorials and workshops).
In this program, participants will compile a teaching portfolio through the following tasks: identification of one’s own teaching aims, two self-evaluations, development of an evidence-based teaching approach, reflective peer observation, a professional development plan, and a presentation of their development over the semester.
The four synchronous workshops will comprise active opportunities for participants to work through, develop, and review their work. Additional time outside of these sessions will also be required throughout the semester.
Intended learning outcomes
After completion of this program, participants should be able to demonstrate the following key skills for effective small-group facilitation:
- Demonstrate sound knowledge of key principles of effective small-group learning and teaching;
- Communicate one’s teaching approach and explain its alignment to practice;
- Evaluate teaching practice(s) in relation to key principles of small-group teaching;
- Demonstrate ongoing critical reflection on the development of one’s own teaching practice.
Suitable for
This program is designed for small-group educators at The University of Melbourne who completed the Certificate in Small-Group Teaching in 2022 or later.
Staff who teach primarily in lecture settings are recommended to consider the Melbourne Teaching Certificate instead.
Program structure
The program will comprise participation in four in-person synchronous workshops and completion of the individual assessment tasks. In-person attendance in the four workshops is required, as multiple necessary program components will take place during workshop time. Additional time outside of these sessions will also be required throughout the semester for completion of the assessment tasks and development of one's portfolio. Assessment of the completed portfolio will lead to evaluations of ‘sound’, ‘strong’, or ‘very strong’ for each of the four learning outcomes, which will be documented on the Certificate of Completion.
