Graduate Certificate in University Teaching (GCUT)
GCUT is a part-time course designed to enhance the teaching skills of staff in higher education institutions. It is delivered online or in a mixed attendance mode.
The Graduate Certificate in University Teaching combines research-based, theoretical seminars with practical exercises involving peer review and negotiated projects. It is offered part-time to complement participants’ current teaching practice. This course is suitable for staff currently teaching in higher education institutions, or staff in vocational and training institutions who plan to teach in higher education.

- Critically analyse theories and principles and apply them appropriately to a range of teaching and learning contexts;
- Discuss and evaluate some of the key research relating to teaching and learning in higher education and the major debates in the area;
- Evaluate and adapt teaching approaches to suit various learning environments;
- Apply knowledge of teaching and learning theories to design curriculum, including assessment tasks and learning activities;
- Evaluate and use educational technologies to facilitate learning in large and small classes;
- Critically reflect on the place of assessment in higher education, and the strengths and limitations of various assessment designs to enhance learning;
- Experiment and evaluate innovative teaching approaches and techniques;
- Critically reflect on how educational technologies can be used to enhance and enrich student learning;
- Critically reflect on their own teaching practice and use this reflection as a means of continuous improvement

To gain the Graduate Certificate, participants must complete all four subjects, each worth 12.5 credit points.
Teaching method
This course is delivered online or in a mixed attendance mode. Participants must be engaged in teaching in higher education and will normally take the course part-time, over one or two years.

To be eligible for this course, applicants must possess:
- at least a pass-level undergraduate degree or equivalent; or
- a minimum of five years documented, relevant work experience.
Applicants must also be in current employment at a university or higher education institution with significant curriculum design and/or teaching responsibilities (full time, part time or sessional).
Note: Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.
Advanced standing may be considered for:
- Participants who have completed the CSHE’s Melbourne Teaching Certificate in 2022 or after
- Education qualifications such as Diploma of Education
Current University of Melbourne staff
A limited number of University of Melbourne academic staff who have the support of their Dean or Head of School will have their course fees covered by the University.
All other applicants
The 2026 fee for each unit (12.5 credit points):
A$4,500 – Australian fee place (FEE-HELP loans are available to eligible students)
A$6,124 – International fee place
The fees may be subject to change, please refer to the University of Melbourne website for more information on fees.
