A history of The Melbourne University Union

About

This project traces the long history of the Melbourne University Union from its foundation in 1884 until the present, with a focus on the role of Union House and the amenity it has provided. The history traces efforts to foster a university community and the important role of extra-curricular life in shaping the university experience. A book, By Students, For Students: A History of the Melbourne University Union is to be published by Australian Scholarly Press in 2021.

Aim

The project relates to the establishment of the new Student Precinct, and offers an opportunity for reflecting on the significance of Union House, and how its history can inform future plans.
