The Online Induction for Sessional Teachers (OIST) is a self-guided, interactive online course for sessional teachers at the University of Melbourne. It explores educational theory including principles of small group teaching, strategies for student engagement, feedback, encouraging active learning and self-evaluation techniques, and includes a final task of critiquing a filmed tutorial. Upon successful completion of OIST, participants receive a certificate and they may like to consider taking the Advanced Skills for Sessional Teachers program, or the Melbourne Teaching Certificate.
Sessional teachers new to the University of Melbourne.
Once enrolled, the course is available anytime and online.
How to enrol
Follow the direct link: log in to the University LMS with your username and password, then in another tab paste the following URL: http://go.unimelb.edu.au/ezu6 Click the ‘submit’ button.
What happens after enrolment?
Once you are enrolled into OIST, the course is entirely self-directed. There is no specific start or end date, and it is available to you 24/7 wherever you have internet access. OIST takes around 4 hours to complete.
There are four steps to completing OIST:
- Pre course survey
- Complete the course in your own time
- OIST reflective task
- Post course survey
Upon completion of the surveys and the reflective task, you will be issued a certificate.
What if I am not a student or staff member of the University of Melbourne?
If you are not a student or staff member of the University of Melbourne, you will not be able to gain access to OIST. To find out if you are a member of an affiliate institution who is eligible to participate in OIST, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
I’ve been in OIST for a while, and I see that the pre and post course surveys are now in the LMS community, rather than external – do I need to do the pre-course survey again?
No, you won’t need to do the survey again. Of course, if you’d like to do it again, you may. Following a refresh, the pre- and post- course surveys are now available within the LMS community (look in the left hand menu) rather than through an external survey vendor. It’s quicker and easier to do the surveys now.
