Professor Tim Parkin

Tatoulis Chair in Classics
School of Historical and Philosophical Studies

Faculty of Arts

Tim joined The University of Melbourne in 2018, after nearly three decades of experience as a teacher and researcher –  20 of those years as a full-professor – in universities in NZ, Australia, Germany, and UK. He has taught in a range of areas, mostly classical (history, literature, mythology, Latin & ancient Greek languages) but also in subjects in sociology, anthropology, archaeology, medicine, history, criminology, psychology, linguistics, literature, religion, and engineering. He has won a number of teaching awards, from both his employer and student bodies. He has also taken a leading role in mentoring younger colleagues. He has a good deal of experience reviewing his peers in teaching (and being reviewed himself). He also enjoys almost all aspects of teaching enormously. He is delighted that Melbourne is now introducing the peer-review system and is keen to be involved in it.
