Karena is the Deputy Program Director of the Bachelor of Biomedicine and an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Melbourne Center for the Study of Higher Education (secondment position). She possesses over 15 years’ experience in teaching and learning at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, primarily in the biomedical sciences, in class sizes ranging from 25-500. Karena possesses extensive experience in subject and course development and design, including practical-based classes, and has strong interests in improving student experience, engagement and learning outcomes. Karena is also the Department’s Academic Programs Coordinator, Majors Coordinator and the Exchange/Global Mobility Coordinator. External to the Department, Karena sits on numerous Academic Committees, primarily focusing on learning and teaching, academic governance and program management, including Faculty and University APC Committees, TALQAC and the Bachelor of Science Course Standing Committee. Karena has been awarded an Early Career Teaching Award from the Melbourne Medical School and the Australian Society for Microbiology’s David White Excellence in Teaching Award.
