Designing online exams for large cohorts
The rapid shift to remote delivery has forced all learning activities, including assessment tasks, into the online environment. Exams are commonly used to assess student learning across large cohorts, but can present specific challenges when set online. In this seminar, we will discuss ways to get ‘back to basics’ to create exams that are both meaningful for student learning and suitable for the online environment. Using educational best-practice and real-world examples, presenters discussed how to structure exams and choose question formats to meet student learning objectives, selection of a suitable platform, and academic integrity considerations.
Karena Waller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and Deputy Program Director of the Bachelor of Biomedicine. Karena has joined the Melbourne CSHE on a secondment and focuses primarily on teaching and learning, student experience and engagement, and academic governance and program management.
Elisa Bone is a Senior Lecturer in Higher Education Curriculum and Assessment – STEM, at the Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education. Elisa has research interests in interdisciplinary and authentic teaching and learning in the sciences, in the implementation of strategic curriculum change processes, and in embedding cultural competence and Indigenous perspectives into science curricula.
