Melanie is a historical musicologist specialising in late nineteenth and early twentieth century art music. Her research intersects musicology with cultural history, music semiotics and ethnohistory. She studies the ways in which meaning is conveyed through music and how music contributes to the construction of identities. Melanie is also passionate about teaching and holds degrees in General Education and Music Education. Her teaching experience is broad and diverse, encompassing over 35 years, 28 of them within the higher education sector both in Australia and overseas. Her teaching has been recognised through various awards, including a 2014 OLT National Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, and the 2013 Barbara Falk Award for Teaching Excellence.
