Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research

For over ten years, the University of Melbourne has hosted professional development programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research students. Students have come from all over Australia to take part in our highly regarded one-week intensive program.

Working together as a cohort, student develop a wide range of research skills in a culturally respectful learning environment underpinned by Indigenous perspectives. The Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research (GC-IRPRO) is fully recognised as an award course of the University of Melbourne. It is an interdisciplinary program which explores research and develops research skills from an Indigenous perspective, and considers 'Indigenous research' as not only research by Indigenous individuals but also research on Indigenous topics.

Upon satisfactory completion of the course, participants are awarded a Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research, which will also give them 25 credit points towards the Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Research and Leadership.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Resolve research issues and bring this ability to the solving of research problems from an Indigenous perspective
• Demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues and conduct in Indigenous research
• Demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of principles, practices and milestones in developing and completing their research projects
• Communicate such understanding and skills effectively through oral and written research presentations.

Suitable for

Research Higher Degree students (Masters or PhD) from any Australian university who are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Applicants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent

• Current enrolment in a Research Higher Degree course at Masters level or above. A Research Higher Degree is defined as requiring at least two-thirds research work and not more than one-third coursework.
• Written endorsement from the applicant's principal research project supervisor and the relevant head(s) of department or equivalent.

For applicants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent costs are subsidised.
