After 250 years of colonisation, institutions and individuals are only really starting to have conversations about Indigenous engagement now. With a history of unethical practices, and harmful impacts on communities, developing a robust and genuine approach to community engagement is a difficult task. Pride, fear and paralysis often drive common sense out the window. So how do we support a culture of humility, reciprocity and humanity to support better engagement with Indigenous communities? How do we move beyond a University v. Community dichotomy to better understand the interconnectedness of our relations, and also support better collegial engagement, and engagement with place.
Aurora Milroy, the Manager of the Indigenous Knowledge Institute draws on her background in policy and management, and shares her experiences, principles, philosophies and practical ideas that university communities across all levels could consider before and when engaging with Indigenous communities and colleagues.
Aurora Milroy is a Palyku woman from Western Australia. She is currently the manager of the Indigenous Knowledge Institute and was was formerly was the Advisor, First Peoples Programs and Strategy at the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) in Melbourne. Aurora has a Masters of Public Policy from the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the University of Western Australia.
