Embedding a community of inquiry within a flipped learning environment to encourage student engagement

Faculty of Business and Economics

In 2019, the presenters received a FlexAP Plus 300 grant to “flip” ACCT20007 - Accounting Information: Risks and Controls.  Due to COVID-19 and the shift to a virtual campus, this flip occurred online. This presentation explores how the Community of Inquiry (CoI) Framework was used to enhance student engagement online.

The CoI Framework (Garrison, 2007) is based on three “presences”: social, teaching and cognitive.  The presenters shared how these presences were established: social presence through the formation of study groups; teaching presence was established by engaging with students through formative feedback across various tasks; cogntivie presence was established through the flipped learning environment. The presenters discuss how the curation of this presence fostered peer-to-peer engagement within the subject, lessons learned and implications for future deliveries.

This Zoom presentation was part of the Melbourne CSHE Teaching and Learning Conference 2021 held on Wednesday 2 June 2021.
