Professor Jane den Hollander AO gave the first in a series of occasional seminars entitled ‘Retiring, but not Shy’, where she reflected on her time in higher education and current developments in the sector.

Professor den Hollander writes:

“When my Granddad retired it was a full stop on work - a hard life of active service in a war and managing a factory floor meant he had 10 years of retirement before he died. But retirement in the modern era is another thing altogether. Our generation is fitter, better educated and mostly longer lived so it’s a whole new chapter. My first stint of retirement from full time work was in July 2019 and I am just re-retiring this month for the second time. I look forward to the conversation on our sector and how to face life after work.”

Professor den Hollander was interim Vice-Chancellor of The University of Western Australia from February to July 2020. She was Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University from 2010 to 2019, and previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Curtin University in Western Australia. In 2017 Professor den Hollander was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to tertiary education.
