Nigel Palmer is a Honorary Research Fellow with the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne. His research interests include student participation and equity, higher education  quality assurance and management and research and research training  policy and practice.

Recent publications and reports include Working With the  APEC Higher Education Diploma Supplement Model (2013) for the Australian  Government and APEC, The CRC Contribution to Research Training (2012)  for The Cooperative Research Centres Association, Scope, Transparency  and Style: System-Level Quality Strategies and the Student Experience in  Australia (2012), a report on research training for The Australian  Government (2010), and Selection and Participation in Higher Education,  commissioned by the Group of Eight Universities (2011).

Nigel has been directly involved in the development of series of major research projects and initiatives in graduate studies, including the ARC Linkage Project Reconceptualising the Doctoral Experience (2006), the OLT project for developing the Good Practice Framework for Research Training in Australia (2012-13), ALTC projects on Research Graduate Skills (2007-2008) and Pathways to the PhD (2011-12),  the development of the Postgraduate Survey of Student Engagement  (POSSE) (2009) and the National Research Students Survey (NRSS)  commissioned by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace  Relations (DEEWR).

Nigel was a member of the Joint Steering Group of the Australian Universities Quality Forum (2008-2011) and Chair of the 2011 forum Reference Group and Selection Committee, and was among the inaugural members of the Federal Government's Research Workforce Strategy Reference Group (2009).  Nigel was previously National President of the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) from 2007-2009, and CAPA's National Policy and Research Advisor in 2010.
