The Graduate Certificate in Advanced Learning and Leadership (GCALL) is an advanced interdisciplinary course designed exclusively for doctoral candidates and early career researchers at the University of Melbourne. It is a formal award consisting of two 25-point subjects (MULT90016 Ethical Leadership and MULT90015 The Futures Project) and is the first of its kind in Australian universities.
The course has been designed around a simple idea: that doctoral graduates from The University of Melbourne will make a significant contribution to shaping the world's future. The education provided in the course advances students’ knowledge, research ethics and integrity. It also polishes, broadens and applies these attributes, preparing students to play a leadership role in their chosen field.
Students will develop transferable skills in leadership, project management, cross-disciplinary problem solving and communication, such as those listed below.
- Reach beyond your PhD
The GCALL complements PhD study by offering a breadth experience and the chance to develop key skills in interdisciplinary problem-solving and teamwork. The GCALL will give students a new perspective on where their research fits in to a bigger picture, and on how they can begin to apply the skills and experiences of their research training to new challenges.
- Find out where your PhD can take you
Surprisingly little is known about the career trajectories of Australian PhD graduates. What is clear is that fewer than fifty per cent will go to have an academic career, and that graduates are increasingly seeking and finding work in a wide range of sectors. With choice and opportunity can come uncertainty. One of the overarching aims of the GCALL is to enable students to understand more about themselves, their capabilities and their ambitions - whatever these may be.
- Get an employability edge
PhD graduates are valued by employers for their initiative, intellectual ability and the capacity to work autonomously. Research conducted by the UK Grad Programme has shown that they can also be perceived as lacking interpersonal and team-working skills, flexibility and adaptability and commercial awareness. The GCALL will enable students to develop, extend and demonstrate these skills through practical activities, targeted assessment and guided self-reflection.
- Meet some extraordinary people
A wide range of experts - community and corporate leaders as well as academics - have been involved in the design and delivery of the curriculum, ensuring that it draws on experiences, insights and knowledge from every sector. The GCALL also creates an intimate context for the exchange of ideas, bringing into small-group discussion speakers students might otherwise only see in the context of a large public lecture or televised address. You will also meet like-minded PhD candidates at the cutting edge of their scholarly fields.

Teaching method and dates
MULT90016 Ethical Leadership subject
This is an intensive subject taught on-campus. It is comprised of one full day (3 July 2017), followed by a one-week intensive course (17-21 July 2017). Participation on all of these days is mandatory.
MULT90015 The Futures Project
In this subject, participants are grouped in teams of five to six and partnered with an external organisation that has a real world issue to solve. After a two-day workshop, the teams will then arrange to meet throughout semester with syndicate members as necessary. Dates for this subject will be announced later in the year.
To be considered, applicants must either be a doctoral candidate or an early career researcher at the University of Melbourne.
