HDR student career pathways and teacher training

This project will provide insight into the career motivations of Higher Degree Research (HDR) students in Australian universities. In particular, the project will investigate the extent to which current HDR students are interested in pursuing an academic career, as well as their experiences of training for teaching in higher education.

As the commissioning body, DEEWR is interested in factors which may contribute to or mitigate the expected shortfall in staff levels at universities over the next decade as the many academic staff who began their careers in the 1970s and 80s move toward retirement.

The project's findings are to be based on a survey of HDR students (the 'National Research Student Survey'), conducted in June 2010 across 38 Australian universities, and an institutional survey of senior university staff with oversight of HDR programs, also administered during June 2010.
