The Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Research and Leadership (GC-IRL) is an interdisciplinary coursework program which aims to develop leadership skills and capacity in, or involving, Indigenous research. Applicants for the course must either have completed the Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research (GC-IRPRO), or have already completed a doctorate (see Entry Requirements).
The curriculum of the course is underpinned by Indigenous perspectives and has aspects which can be tailored to each participant's work context and career.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Tackle complex issues in Indigenous research and resolve them by applying a sophisticated awareness of Indigenous perspectives
- Develop the capacity to influence the ethical conducting of Indigenous research
- Develop the ability to influence both Indigenous research policy, and the application of research in policy contexts beyond universities
- Demonstrate high-level competence in professional presentation of research, both verbally and in writing
- Undertake a research project directly relevant to the student's professional or academic context
- Enhance skills in critical reflection, including self-awareness, in relation to Indigenous leadership.
- People of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who have completed or are nearing completion* of a doctoral degree and are ready for a leadership role.
- People of non-Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who have completed or are nearing completion* of a doctoral degree on an Indigenous topic.
* We do not recommend this course for those who are just about to submit their theses due to the time commitments required for the assessment component. If you are close to submission but wish to apply for this course, your letter of support from your supervisor must indicate that you will be able to complete the assessment requirements. See Apply Now section for more information.
Advanced standing may be obtained either through MULT90022 Indigenous Research (a 25-point compulsory subject) which students complete in the Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research (GC-IRPRO); or through a doctoral degree plus evidence of engagement with Indigenous research.

About the subject
This subject builds on participants' prior experience and expertise in Indigenous research and/or what they have learned in the Indigenous Research (MULT90022) subject. It aims to develop further leadership skills relevant to academic contexts such as:
- Research supervision
- Research grants and project management
- Mentoring of junior researchers, especially those from an Indigenous background
- Applying research findings and/or an evidence base to issues arising in professional, community and industry contexts.
This subject is taught over a five-day intensive program utilising lectures, seminars, and group activities. Assessment tasks include a verbal presentation and group project during the intensive and a longer individual research project tailored to participants' work context and career. Please note that, due to the latter's time commitment, we do not recommend participation in this subject/course for those who are just about to submit their theses.
9 - 13 July 2018, inclusive.
Participants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent will be provided with accommodation for this period.
Applicants who have completed the Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research
- Recent completion of, near completion of or demonstrable progress in a Research Higher Degree course (requiring at least two-thirds research work) at Masters level or above.
- Written endorsement from principal research project supervisor and the relevant head(s) of department or equivalent, including verification of the applicant's progress or completion.
All other applicants
- A Doctoral degree.
- Demonstrable engagement with key issues in Indigenous research.
- Written endorsement from principal research supervisor and the relevant head(s) of department or equivalent, including verification of the applicant's completion.
Applicants who wish to apply for advanced standing must first discuss their intent with the Course Coordinator prior to submitting their application.
If successful, the advanced standing will be equivalent to 25 credit points (in lieu of the MULT90022 Indigenous Research subject/Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research).
The Selection Committee will allocate at least three quarters of the available places to applicants from any discipline who are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and who fulfill the entry requirements listed above. Confirmation of Indigenous status may be sought for such applicants.
The remaining available places may then be allocated to academically qualified applicants not of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, whose research is on Indigenous topics.

Costs are subsidised and accommodation for the week-long intensive program will be provided.
For Australian fee-paying applicants
A$6,432 for the 25-point subject. This fee includes meals during the intensive program and course materials. It does not include accommodation.

- A 200-word statement by you as the applicant describing:
- The career path you have followed (or expect to follow) after completing your Research Higher Degree
- The leadership role(s) you are playing (or expect to play) in relation to research
- What you hope to learn from the course, including how it might enhance your leadership capacity in relation to academic and other communities, including Indigenous.
If you have NOT completed the MULT90022 Indigenous Research subject or obtained the Professional Certificate in Indigenous Research, you must also provide the following supporting documents:
- Evidence of a completed doctoral degree. If this is not apparent from your transcript - for example, if you have submitted your thesis but not yet received a result - your supervisor's statement of support should clarify this.
- Evidence of demonstrable engagement with key issues in Indigenous research. If your thesis was on an Indigenous topic, a key chapter from your thesis will be sufficient evidence. If your thesis was not on an Indigenous topic, other sources of evidence will be required, such as a paper you have published on an Indigenous topic or a report on a community-based research project you were involved in. Please discuss this with the Course Coordinator before applying.
